04 — Review

Chanel Coco Noir Eau de Parfum is the 2012 Eau de Parfum that Chanel describes as a modern ambery fragrance: bergamot and citrus over rose and geranium leaf, settling into patchouli, tonka bean and incense-tinged woods. It is the darker, evening-oriented member of the Coco family.

Chanel Coco Noir Eau de Parfum at a glance

  • Fragrance style: amber floral with a patchouli-tonka base.
  • Best for: evenings, dates, events and formal occasions.
  • Recommended seasons: autumn and winter.
  • Character: elegant, deep and enveloping.

What does Chanel Coco Noir Eau de Parfum smell like?

The opening is a brief citrus brightness of grapefruit, bergamot and orange, quickly giving way to the darker heart.

Rose and geranium sit at the centre with jasmine, narcissus and a soft peach facet; Chanel highlights May rose and geranium rose leaf. The florals feel dense and velvety rather than fresh.

The base carries the character: patchouli and sandalwood with olibanum, tonka bean, vanilla and benzoin, warmed by a hint of cloves and softened by white musk.

This is our reading of the composition as documented below, not a wear test: how it behaves on your skin is something only sampling will tell you.

Where these notes come from

Chanel officially names bergamot, May rose, geranium rose leaf, tonka bean and patchouli. The fuller pyramid shown comes from Fragrantica, a third-party database, which credits Jacques Polge and Christopher Sheldrake.

Choosing the right version

Coco Noir is distinct from Coco (1984) and from Coco Mademoiselle; despite the name, each is a separate composition, and the scores here belong to Coco Noir Eau de Parfum only.

Performance and projection

The longevity and projection scores on this profile are Parfumo community ratings for this exact concentration, checked on 3 November 2026 — not a SCENTIVOIRE skin test. Parfumo publishes no versatility score, so we show none. Your skin, dose and climate will change the result.

Longevity

Parfumo members rate longevity 7.4/10 (842 ratings).

Projection

Parfumo members rate sillage 7.0/10 (831 ratings).

Versatility

Parfumo publishes no versatility score, so this profile shows none rather than an estimate. The season suggestions below are guidance, not a score.

Best seasons to wear it

  • Autumn: a natural fit; the patchouli-tonka base feels at home in cooler air.
  • Winter: excellent for evenings and indoor wear.
  • Spring: possible on cool evenings with a light application.
  • Summer: not recommended in strong heat.

These are editorial selection suggestions, not seasonal scores.

Who is it for?

Choose Coco Noir if you like deep, polished florals with patchouli and an ambery warmth for evenings and colder months. Avoid blind-buying it if you mainly wear fresh, airy scents: this is a dense, cold-weather composition.

Alternatives to Coco Noir

If you enjoy the patchouli backbone but want something brighter for daytime, compare it with the Coco Mademoiselle Eau de Parfum profile, which shares the patchouli-rose idea in a fresher register.

SCENTIVOIRE verdict

Coco Noir is Chanel’s most evening-ready Coco: velvety, warm and confident without being loud. Sample it in cool weather to judge the patchouli-tonka drydown, which is the part you will live with.

Sources and methodology

Retailer prices, availability and community votes checked on 3 November 2026. Concentration, launch year and product identity are attributed to Chanel. The top–heart–base pyramid and the perfumer credit come from Fragrantica, a third-party database. The description of the scent is our editorial reading of that documented composition. The performance scores are community data, not our own test: longevity and projection are Parfumo community ratings out of 10 (842 longevity and 831 sillage ratings); Parfumo publishes no versatility score, so none is shown. Listed notes describe the olfactory composition, not proof of natural ingredients in the formula.
